LaunchBar.app - Version: 1.00 Author: Norbert Heger -------------------------------------------------- LaunchBar - THE DIFFERENT WAY OF ACCESSING FILES ... It's available via anonymous ftp at: ftp://hal.kph.tuwien.ac.at/pub/NeXT/tools/LaunchBar.1.00.NI.b.tar.gz LaunchBar is a small and powerful easy to use tool designed to provide a fast and simple access to hundreds of applications, files and folders just by typing a few letters contained in the filename. The idea is quite simple. Wouldn't it be nice just to type the letters LIB to get Librarian.app to be started? Or OW for OmniWeb? Or FM to get the Documentation of FontManager loaded? And wouldn't it be nice having this feature available from within ANY application irrespectivie of its current state? That's what LaunchBar can do for you! LaunchBar can be understood as an unconventional alternative to existing dock extenders. In contrast to these applications LaunchBar offers several advantages: - Using the keyboard is usually far more efficient than using the mouse. Theoretically you can distinguish between nearly 1000 different items just by typing two letters! - The number of files that can be managed with this system is far bigger. You can handle hundreds up to thousands of files without loosing control. - Even if the number of files is growing, the time that's necessary to find a specific one keeps nearly constant. - The application needs much less of your valuable screen space. *** How it works *** There's just a small window ± in fact not much more than the titlebar of a window ± to be placed in some corner of your desktop ready to receive your keystrokes specifying a few letters contained in the filename you are looking for. And already while you are typing this short abbreviation, the best matching item is evaluated in a fraction of a second and shown in the titlebar of the LaunchBar window ready to be accessed. LaunchBar uses an adaptive search algorithm that becomes more accurate the more you use it. It simply learns from your habits.
