Welcome to the official Xnext 3.00 distribution! Xnext is an X server for OPENSTEP 4.2 platforms that supports various screen depths reflecting the different NeXT and DriverKit modes. An X screen that's realised as a window in the common OPENSTEP UI enables you to start and display X11 applications on your system. DISTRIBUTION PARTS Xnext consists of the following archive packages: X11R6.3-basic.m.I.tgz X11R6.3 basic distribution. X11R6.3-libfonts.m.I.tgz X11R6.3 fonts and bitmap data. Xnext-server.[version].m.I.tgz The OPENSTEP X server application. In contrast to older Xnext distributions, the new version 3.00 and up only runs on Intel platforms (so far) and needs OPENSTEP 4.2 and maybe Rhapsody in the future. INSTALLATION To install Xnext on your computer system, you need access to the /usr folder. The X11R6.3 window system requires its files to be located under /usr/X11R6.3 and you should add the binary path /usr/X11R6.3/bin to your path variable. Unpack the X11R6.3-basic and X11R6.3-libfonts archives and make sure the /usr/X11R6.3 exists afterwards. If you want to put the archives' contents into some other folder, you can create a link in /usr to this location. To start up X applications from Terminal.app, you have to set the DISPLAY environment variable (e.g. using setenv in your .login or .cshrc file). The variable should have the format "localhost:0.0:, where localhost is your host name (try the hostname shell command in Terminal.app). RELEASE NUMBERS Currently, only the Xnext-server archive is expected to change in it's version number. All other archive files are a default X11R6.3 distribution, so the version number is 6.3.
