Quick start




Try to click with the right button of the mouse on all the buttons you see on the screen to find all the functions in Devil Studio. (For example, on the track channel, on the track name,...)

I can't hear Midi note from input or output !
Verify that BeOS recognize your Midi/Audio card.

How do i report bugs, request new functions ,... ?
Go to the Devil Studio web site to have informations or to be informed about the Devil Studio commercial release. Report your bugs or ask for new functions to softjee@softjee.com.

How to create a part ?
There's several ways to create parts. A empty part can be created with the "Write" tools (click with the right button of the mouse into the arrangment to see the tools). A "filled" part can be created while recording. Press the record button and play your Midi input. The part will be created when Devil Studio record the first note. To stop the recording, use the stop button.

Where are parts recorded ?
Midi event are recorded into the current track (in red). Then you record Midi event into the current part (if the playing locator is above a part) or into a part that Devil Studio will create.

How to move the playing locator and the right/left locators ?
Use the mouse and press the SHIFT key to move the playing locator. Use the mouse with the right or left button on the bar field to move the right or left locator.

How to edit a part and make operation on it ?
Double-click on the part you want to work on to edit it with the current tools. The current tool is defined in the track options window (click on the channel information of the track to display the track options window). Use the right button of the mouse on the part to make operations.

How to select and move parts ?
A selected part is displayed in red, a muted part in grey. Select a part by clicking on it. Use the WINDOWS key to add or delete parts. By clicking out of a part, you can select severals parts by moving the mouse. To move severals selected part, click one part and move it.

What is the Track volume, Panoramic,...panel ?
These graphical panels display curve. These curves are composed of some points (only one point by default). For example, the "Track volume" panel change the velocity of the current track. To insert a point in the curve, click on it with the left button of the mouse (the right button show you some tools). Use the SHIFT key to define a fade between two point. The "Track Volume", "Channel volume", "Panoramic" and "Program change" are independant per track. The "B.P.M." is general.


What is the "Live machine" function ?
The "Live machine" function allow you to define sub-sequence and manage them with internal or external command. Click on an empty step to create one. A step is a part of the music (defined by the left and right locator). You can loop a step, stop a step at its end or make a pause at the step's end. To activate the "Live Machine" function, click on the "LIVE" button in the command panel. You can define external commmand by clicking on the "LIVE" button with the right mouse button.


Some shortcuts.
  • Enter : Play the music
  • Espace bar :Stop the playing or the recording
  • 0 (pad) : Set the playing locator at the music's start.
  • 1 (pad) : ...at the left locator.
  • 2 (pad) : ...at the right locator.
  • 3 (pad) : ...at the position of the playing locator.
